Both but mainly rear because up hills (generally slippy areas) a front wheel isn't going to help you and if you think about a car in mud and the front wheels turning will it have more grip than a rear wheel car??? And will a front wheel beat a rear wheel: going up hill no, turning maybe, Downhill idk. So I said both.

Not possible to rear to get enough traction, its to light on back becase all (almost) cars have engine on front.
    Light car get less traction.
EPS, ASR easy can help here :)

Just like Takumi where he can beat a 4WD with a FR...

Front weel drive pulls the car good FOR off road on Hills
back weel drive pushes the car good FOR speed
4 weel drive is all rounder good FOR rain offroad and hills

In real life it's for sure rwd, but in this game I don't see that much difference but I still think rwd is better.

Except this game doesnt take skill into concideration because the driver for every race has the same skill

Nope, in real life front wheel drive wins in slippery conditions due to additional weight over the driven wheels. I live in the northern US and have a ton of experience driving in snow and on dirt roads. However this does not seem to be reflected in the game, which is kinda disappointing to be honest.

FWD hands down. Its just more stable than RWD.
Except for hillclimbs, RWD is better. Most of the weight shifted into the back, and RWD is better for acceleration.
