Driving Games

So what games do people play (or have played) that they really enjoy?

The first driving game I sunk a load of time into was Pitstop II on the C64, those were the days!

Since then I have played loads but never really got into the Sim aspect of it, more arcade style for me.
Have a Logitech wheel sitting in the shed for years unused.

As a PC gamer, for the longest time, I was keyboard only though I am now trying out Dirt 4 with an XBox pad.

So a quick list of what I can remember pumping the most time into:

Gran Turismo - PS1, loved that 4WD FTO
TrackMania - Various iterations on PC though preferred Original & Sunrise
Colin McRae - Various versions on PS & PC
Mobil 1 Rally - great looking game for its time on PC
Fuel - Spent way too many hours grinding through this
NFS Most Wanted - Only really remember the M3 GTR
NFS Underground 2 - Definitely remember Brooke Burke
Grid 1/2
Super MarioKart on SNES - God the hours I spent playing this at University
Test Drive Unlimited 1/2 - Another grindfest, loved that final around Hawaii race

I did play Richard Burns Rally for about 10 minutes but couldn't even drive in a straight line for more than 10 seconds without careering off into the undergrowth, so I gave up!

Waiting for a good price on Forza Horizon 3/4 then I will try them next.

Forza Motorsport 4, if you have an Xbox 360. For me this game is the best Forza Motorsport so far.

Gran Turismo 2 & 3 took hours of my life. Had PS1/2/3 but in the current gen I went xbox one (mainly for the kids). I would get a PS4 just to play GT again.

Ahh, this thread is bringing back old memories. Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, and Midnight Club were the cornerstones of my racing game days

I've played sooooo many driving games for hours on end

Pole Position on the Atari is probably what started it.

These games in the arcade took a lot of my quarters:
    • Spy Hunters
    • Roadblasters
    • Ivan "IronMan" Stewart's Super Offroad
    • Hard Drivin'
    • HotRod
    • San Francisco Rush
    • S.T.U.N. Runner
Moved on to NES once I was able to buy my own
    • Rad Racer (still never made it past the second level)
    • R.C Pro-Am
    • Excitebike
    • Galaxy 5000
    • Spy Hunter (again)
Graduated to TurboGrafx16, Genesis, Super Nintendo, & Atari Lynx for the next console generation
    • A.P.B.
    • F-Zero (100% complete on the hardest level.  I remember being so proud of that as a kid.)
    • Rock N' Roll Racing
    • Hard Drivin' & Race Drivin'
    • Moto Roader
    • Road Rash 1, 2, & 3
    • S.T.U.N. Runner
    • Super Mario Kart
    • Test Drive II: The Duel
    Next came a Nintendo 64 and PS1
    • Beetle Adventure Racing (as stupid as the name sounds, it was pretty fun)
    • Cruis'N USA & World
    • Destruction Derby 2
    • Driver 1 & 2
    • F-Zero X
    • Gran Turismo 1 & 2
    • Mario Kart 64
    • Need for Speed II, III, High Stakes
    • San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing, Rush 2, & Rush 2049
    • Test Drive 4, 5, 6, & OffRoad 2
Obviously upgraded to the PS2, XBox, & Gamecube
    • Driver
    • F-Zero GX
    • Forza Motorsport
    • Gran Turismo 3 & 4 (took a lot of my time in this console generation)
    • Need for Speed Carbon & Hot Pursuit (started losing my interest in NFS at this point)
    • Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2
    • Smuggler's Run 1 & 2
    • Stuntman & Stuntman Ignition
    • TOCA Race Driver (seriously fun with all the different genres of racing)
Who expected me to not move to the next generation of consoles? (XBox 360, PS3, & Wii)
    • Burnout Paradise
    • DIRT 1, 2, & 3
    • Driver: San Francisco
    • Forza Horizon 1 & 2
    • Forza Motorsport 2, 3, & 4
    • Need For Speed: The Run
    • Gran Turismo 5 (last time I played GT)
    • Mario Kart Wii
    • Project Gotham Racing 3 & 4
Now on the current generation of consoles I've really scaled back my time spent playing multiple games and concentrated on playing a few to 100% (XBox One & PS4)
    • Dirt Rally
    • Forza Horizon 3 & 4
    • Forza Motorsport 5, 6, & 7
And of course the PC stuff in the early days
    • Monster Truck Madness (spent many hours downloading player-made tracks via 28.8/56K modem)
    • Test Drive

I liked the map of 2 & 3 better.  This current map feels small.

    Great List.

Forgot about the Arcade. Played most of those you mentioned.
Plus who can forget Nancy's dulcet tones in Chase HQ. Wasn't A.P.B. you mentioned the sequel? Never really played it.
Loved Spy Hunter in the Arcade and on my C64.

Super Sprint 2 also got a few 10p pieces.
OutRun got completed a few times.
Most of my arcade time though was spent on Shinobi, Rastan Saga, Gauntlet and StreetFighter 2.

No, unless two games shared a name.  The A.P.B. I played was a top-down driver on the Atari Lynx.  Humorous and a little bit less of a "rail driver".

Grew up playing the early need for speed titles, back when each iteration was clearly better than the rest. Everything up to and including Porsche 2000 was a clear improvement over the earlier one.

That said, 2010 Hot Pursuit is a perfect reimagining of the early cops vs crims concept. Absolutely love it.
Gran Turismo 4/psp also stole a lot hours from my life. Psp version was clearly inferior, but unlike gt4 I could have played that during lectures.

Ooh and stunt gp! stunt system could use a bit more depth but the game was so much fun.

    Anyone played rollcage?

Mostly Gran Turismo 1 & 2, but I started out with something called continental circus on some sort of spectrum +3. Also played a lot of Rage Racer on PS1. I couldn’t really get into Forza.

Anybody currently playing gran turismo sport? It's renewed my love for the gt series, even caused me to go out and drop some good money on a wheel for it

    Epic!

    How could I forget Carmageddon.
Remember playing the demo and accidentally doing a 360 barrel roll jumping over a building and getting my first Cunning Stunt... awesome.
We then went on to play networked matches in lunchtime at my first job, we were all hooked... good times... getting a granite car powerup and smashing someone when they were 1 second away from winning a 'Fox and Hounds' matchup... so satisfying

Street Rod 1/2, hasn't really been a game like it done well since either

Haven't seen this one mentioned yet! The first racing game I ever played, it was so good back in the day

    Stunt drivin' anyone?

    Micro machines?

    Wipeout?

    Road rash?

I know we're all old and forgetful (judging by these lists every single player here is approaching 40) but C'mon guys.

Stunt Drivin'?  Was that part of the Hard Drivin' & Race Drivin' series?

I played the Micro Machine games, but didn't care much for them; same with Wipeout.

I mentioned Road Rash in the Genesis era.  Your old age must be affecting your eyesight. ;) :p

Omg, I remember having to go through that security book printed red on black to get the code to be able to play that game. What a random memory!

I've played a lot over the past 2 decades but both the Forza Motorsport/Horizon series are hands down the best in the genre. Anyone who calls themselves a driver and gamer owes it to themselves to try it out 😎

Grand Theft Auto, each single one version of them.

For the PS2 there was a game called Test Drive - Eve of Destruction. Was totally different from the average racing fare as you competed events at the local fairground. Derbys, Soccer, Gauntlets... fun as hell. In fact, if I had a ps2.......
