In real world this could never happened, an 4wd RALLY car loses over an SUV and a Rwd rally. That's why so many people they were chasing this car, seems to me its broken and wasn't worth the effort or the upset that caused to so many players.
Check out this one: Looking at the race it wasn't even close. It's like the Escort was the one with 4WD.
Escort rallye is king of off road slalom because it is super light. Add on top of that the traction bonus and that’s what you get. Not saying it is right, by any means, but I believe these are the reasons with the current game engine. For the record I abhor the weight traction bonus, complete non sense leading to half of the “unbelievable results” in this thread.

Who needs 4WD when you have EUTB?
Sebastien Loeb won 4 WRC titles on a unicycle with 107 engine traction bonus...
I can explain this one, but it wont make much sense.
For whatever reason, Off-road tyre cars are extremely sensitive to upgrades. a maxxed RQ14 escort, while sporting worse stats, will still win against a 111 RQ22 escort which is seemingly sporting better stats. I believe it has something to do with engine upgrades giving a traction boost as well. Heres two examples of how much difference a few upgrades can make: Heres a 1.3-1.3-2.3 Alfa And here's that car now maxxed 3-2-3 on the same track Same idea goes for this Porsche: 2.3-1.3-2.3 3-2-3:
Its a bug in the physics engine, and I'm sure the AWD cars fall in line as well, albeit I haven't done any testing on their behalf.

996 vs 333 is costing me races 😑
The drag leader which was the widebody is now beaten by charger and green hellcat???
I want my 15ur back, it becomes impossible to build a garage.... I invest in my 917 too... I lost my 2 best draggers... Is it really fair?
It s not a game, it s a lotery
Spent so much money on bloody AD chasing that.
How did this happen?
